Driving a Mini-Van Out of Self-Defense

Another scary opinion piece on SUVs ran in the Star Tribune today. Well, it was scary for Echo and Festiva drivers, at least. The article claims that "SUV use has surged more strongly in Minnesota than any other state in the last five years" and then a few paragraphs down, the article says, "when an SUV hits a sedan broadside, the sedan's driver is 22 times more likely than the SUV's driver to die." Yikes!

I vow to drive a mini-van, out of self-defense, with no regard to the coolness factor. I plan to drive the van on slippery days this winter, in case an SUV slides into me. I'll bet the van could take a blow from SUV. Even if it can't, when people driving a fancy Lincoln Navigator see an extra-large 16-year-old van bearing down on them, they might move out of the way in the interest of avoiding a scratch.

Whenever I drive the pup, I take the van. Pet safety comes first. (Well, after people safety, but the pets outnumber the people in my house 4 to 1.) Perro the pup loves to snuggle up on his own bench seat, safely buckled in and ensconced in several layers of polar fleece blankets.

I'm taking a short vacation from blogging. I'll be back next week. In the meantime, buckle up, and try to outmaneuver the SUVs. (Unless you're driving one, in which case, please try not to drive over any Festivas or Echos, and watch out for the mini-vans!)

The Coolest Mini-Van Ever!

  1. Minivans are also safer because they're built like cars (which have pretty stringent safety standards) rather than trucks (which are basically girders welded together with sheet metal bolted on - not safe). I'm not guaranteeing that applies to your 16 year old van of course! In a 35mph crash the driver of a car has a 1 in 50 chance of being seriously hurt. Minivans aren't quite as good as that, but a truck driver has as much as a 1 in 6 chance of being seriously hurt.

Man I can be boring sometimes. Perhaps that's why I actually like my minivan.
