A Night Out on the Town in Farmington

"They howl at the moon, shoot out the light

It's a small town Saturday night" - Hal Ketchum

Last weekend I had an exciting night out on the town in Farmington. The magic began at 7 o'clock, as I dressed in my best blouse and my new grey wool coat (well, it was new last spring at least.) If you've spent weekends with me before, you've had a chance to see me sporting part of my large collection of Metallica and Guns'N'Roses apparel. So right now, you might be asking yourself, "What the heck was Mary doing without a Metallica sweatshirt on a Friday night?" Well, Friday night I had my portrait appointment for the pictorial directory at Farmington Lutheran. Olan Mills only rolls into town once every four years to take congregants' photos, so it really is a special occasion.

The photographer took several shots of me with my hands demurely folded, one arm propped up on a chunk of wood covered by a swatch of black fake fur. I liked the one with the variegated lavender background the best, even though I had hat hair in the picture, so I chose it for my free 8x10. (I'll bet everyone in the pictorial directory will have hat hair. It was below zero, so I had to put my hood up just to walk across the parking lot.)

After my portrait sitting, Joey and I dined at the best restaurant in town, the Farmington Steakhouse. (Yes, the Farmington Steakhouse, home of the $2.35 chopped steak lunch special.) I ordered the shrimp and Joey had the rib eye dinner special. The waitress threw in two extra pieces of Texas toast and two pieces of pie, plus a free coffee for me. It was near closing and so cold out that all of the tables were empty. The only sound was the clink of the spoon on my coffee mug as I stirred in the cream. Farmington Steakhouse has their own custom coffee mugs, decorated with a picture of a steer. I suppose it's a nice representation of what the entree looked like when it was still alive. Instead of using paper placemats like most of the restaurants in town, the Steakhouse serves meals on mint green cafeteria-style trays. Just seeing the stack of them near the door is enough to make most people's mouths start watering with the anticipation of a juicy steak.

The coffee and the free slice of banana cream pie were the best ever. My exciting night out on the town ended with a drive home in the Echo, enjoying a full tummy, with the heater and the CD player both cranked up to ward off the 30 below wind chill. Sometimes it just takes a little Metallica to top off the perfect Farmington evening.

  1. Who knows if you'll see this since you made this post such a long time ago. But I was *just now* thinking that I would take my kids to the Farmington Steakhouse for dinner tonight, as the one time I was there, I thought it was durned good with great prices. :) I was trying to look up their address online, and found your blog!
